About the library

The library is a research library that emphasizes the preservation and the dissemination of material that relates to the research field of the institution, i.e. Icelandic art.

 

The library is a member of Arlis/Norden (www.arlisnorden.org) – an organization of art libraries in the Nordic countries.


Location

The library is located, along with the main offices of the NG, at Laufásvegur 12, 101 Reykjavík. Tel. 515 9603, 515 9600 • Fax 515 9601. Opening hours: Mondays through Fridays from 9-12 & 13-15.

 

Contents

The library contains a documentation pertaining to art, photographs, videos, cd’s, art books and booklets, Icelandic and foreign books on art; handbooks, dictionaries and registers of  artists. Also to be found in the library are most of the books published in Iceland on Icelandic art. The library also puts emphasis on books on and about 20th Century art in the Nordic countries.

 

Scrapbooks

Media criticism and commentary concerning Icelandic art has been collected since 1950.

 

Collection of documentation

The collection of documentation, started in 1950, includes exhibition catalogues, booklets and other printed material on Icelandic art.

 

Collection of Photography

The collection of photography contains photographs, slides, and digital photography of the artwork in the collection of the NG.

 

The access to films and/or digital photographs of work in the NG’s collection is available for use by specialists as well as the general public. Copyright royalties are collected by Myndstef, on behalf of respective copyright holders.
