Valtýr Pétursson 1919-1988
Valtýr Pétursson was among the artists who dominated the early post-war years in Iceland. He is remembered as one of the pioneers of abstract art in the country, a productive painter, a prolific art critic, and an important participant in artists’ societies. Valtýr leaves behind many oil paintings and works on paper, both in public and private collections, that give an insight into an interesting career in which the basic elements of painting were addressed. Numerous variations on a variety of themes illustrate the fascinating evolution of an artist who was unafraid to accept the challenges of different media, styles and trends.
