When we speak of human usage and management of natural resources we speak of our drive to fulfill our needs, both material and psychological, with the help of nature or some part of it. Cultivation is one method of natural resource use and is categorized as a material need. In times past, people mostly cultivated land for their own needs, but in recent decades agriculture has become industrialized. In this image, the girl holds a genetically modified tomato that has become unnaturally large, In this way, Sara draws the viewer’s attention to the question of the natural logic of genetic modification. Genetically modified organisms contain DNA that has been transformed in a process that deviates from that which happens in nature through mating and/or natural reorganization. Certain rules and regulations on the usage of genetically modified organisms are meant to protect the country’s natural environment, biodiversity, ecosystems, plants and the health of humans and animals from possible damage and undesirable influences. The aim is to guarantee that the production and use of genetically modified organisms is carried out in an ethical and socially responsible manner, in accordance with environmental law protective clauses and the principle of sustainable development. When we look closely, it is evident that the girl is not holding any ordinary tomato, nor does she have naturally red cheeks. Both have been produced with modern technology. In this work, as in much of her other work, Sara raises our awareness of various important issues, Here she turns her gaze to food, in particular the genetically modified food grown and sold for consumption. The presentation of the work is clear; we see a picture of a girl holding two malformed tomatoes she has bought. The look on the girl’s face is ambiguous – she seems nonchalant and the arrangement of the subject matter aims to glorify the tomatoes, as if they were of rare value. Her nonchalant appearance nevertheless raises the important question of how genetically modified food can impact the chain of life and even human health in the long run.
