Frá augnabliki til augnabliks (From Moment to Moment, 1999-2000)

Frá augnabliki til augnabliks er verk sem vísar í söguna og þá dramatík sem sjósókn okkar Íslendinga í gegnum aldirnar hefur einkennst af. Verkið er tileinkað sjómennsku og hafinu en listamaðurinn þekkir sjóinn og sjávarháska af eigin raun. Hér eru tíminn og vatnið staðsett á misjafnan hátt í verkinu. Efsti hlutinn, ljósmynd af sjávarháska, vísar til liðins atburðar. Hún er heimildarhluti verksins og jafnframt upphafspunkturinn. Því næst í tímaröðinni kemur hinn hvíti skuggi. Hann er af sjómanni sem listamaðurinn teiknaði á dvalarheimili aldraðra sjómanna og er þar vísað til minningarinnar sem geymist í minni þeirra sem sótt hafa sjóinn og skilað æviverki sínu. Þar er einnig vísað í frystingu augnabliksins á líkan hátt og ljósmyndin gerir. Þriðja „tímabilið“ í verkinu tengist vatnsskálunum á gólfinu fyrir framan verkin. Í þeim hefur listamaðurinn blandað saman litum og vatni á opnunardegi sýningarinnar í viðleitni sinni til að fjalla um hverfulleika vatnsins sem á eftir að umbreytast og að lokum gufa upp. Fjórði tíminn í verkinu kemur til þegar áhorfandinn stendur andspænis glerinu og speglast sjálfur í því og les tíma og sögu verksins.
From Moment to Moment is a work that alludes to history, and the drama which is an essential element of the Icelandic fisheries over the centuries. The work is devoted to the seaman’s life and the ocean, and the artist has personal experience of seamanship and peril on the high seas. Time and water are&nbsp; differently located in the work. The uppermost part, a photograph of a perilous situation at sea, alludes to a past event. This is the documentary element of the work, and its starting-point. Next comes a white silhouette of a mariner, drawn by the artist at a seamen’s home, evoking the memories stored up in the minds of those who have lived on the ocean wave, and whose life’s work is over. This also references the “freezing” of the moment, as in a photograph. The third “period” of the piece relates to the bowl of water on the floor in front of it. The artist has mixed water and pigments in the bowls on the opening day of the show, seeking to address the ephemerality of water, which will alter and ultimately evaporate. The fourth period in the work is when the observer stands facing the glass, reflected in it, and reads the time and history of the work. RP
